Hamburg Home - Zero Gas Emission

Hamburg (Germany) was chosen by the International Selection Committee to participate in the Expo Shanghai 2010 with its own building project. The building presents Hamburg's experience with energy-saving construction and is a reference for the development of sustainable, energy-saving construction in the city of Shanghai. The Hamburg House will not be taken down like most other Expo buildings after the exhibition, but will continue to be used.

Top-level environmental Technology combining living and working under one Roof will be displayed on site.  The inspiration for the proposal came from the city's "HafenCity" project, where old buildings on the waterfront of the River Elbe are being renovated into modern environmentally friendly buildings with advanced technology. The program is one of the largest urban restructuring projects in Europe in the 21st century and will take another 10 years to complete. It involves residential and commercial sections.

The building concept

Aside its architecture, the Hamburg House is characterized by its design as a passive house with the highest energy standard in the world. The low energy requirement of the Hamburg House is achieved by means of a highly-insulated, air-tight building envelope free of thermal bridges and the use of regenerative energies.

The principles of energy-saving construction in the passive house standard were implemented under consideration of the climate in Shanghai. The building offers comfortable living at heating requirements of less than 15 kWh/m²a and a primary energy requirement of less than 50 kWh/(m²a) to operate the building. These energy savings are achieved for the Hamburg House by optimising the architecture, the building envelope and the latest energy-related technology. A compact, massive body with a well-insulated, air-tight building envelope free of heat bridges reduces energy consumption for heating and cooling in summer and winter. Passive sources of heat such as the sun, people or household appliances cover the largest part of the heat requirement. Sliding shutters controlled by the position of the sun protect the rooms from overheating in the warm months of the year.

Other techniques are smartly used in the Hamburg House regarding Ventilation, Water requirement, Lighting, Quality assurance and Energy management.

Exhibition concept : Home of Hidden Energies

A three-dimensional tree, the “Tree of wishes", that extends through the entire house symbolically guides the visitors through the city.   Along the roots, the trunk and the branches of the tree, the visitors discover Hamburg as a vibrant, open, integrative and economically powerful metropolis on their way through the house – a city that is on a journey towards a people-oriented and sustainable future guided by its visions.

A comprehensive impression of Hamburg will be provided with the urban areas of culture, economy, technological and architectural urban development and architecture as well as outstanding urban projects such as HafenCity, the International Building Exhibition, the International Garden Show and an outlook on the year of the "European Green Capital 2011".

To conclude the exhibition, the close link between Hamburg and China is presented. In the catering section of the house, the guests will be able to experience Hamburg's hospitality, and the supermarket of products provides an overview of Hamburg's partners and famous brands of Hamburg.

The specialist programme accompanying the exhibition provides additional information and rounds off the statements of the exhibition with respect to the fields of innovative building technology, sustainable urban development and people-oriented architecture.

Exhibition

By means of communication, the knowledge about a common and sustainable future in the city is shared and nourished by desires and hopes of the citizens. These desires and hopes are the motor for change, the energies that shape the environment creatively and sustainably and thus lead to a “BetterLife” via a “BetterCity”. In the Hamburg House, the desires and energies are presented and communicated to the visitors together with "Hamburg's answers" using the “The Tree of Good Wishes”
